>> and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" at the olympic games in sochi, russia. i'm matt lauer. >> i'm savannah guthrie alongside a dancing al roker, natalie morales and, of course, some of our closest friends here in sochi. the russian police choir. many of you know them by now because on friday before the opening ceremony, their warm-up act went viral. they did a wonderful rendition

shed led after the downhill portion and impressive slolam portion. we have speed skating and hockey and the team usa and women in action right now. now with the competition is any indication, sochi is an olympics for the ages. julia mancuso won the first medal in alpine skiing with bronze and the women's ice hockey team beating switzerland in a 9-0 preliminary match. a giant day for jamie anderson. >> claims gold. >> her joy apparent on the winner's podium.

a picture tweeted out. and sage kotsenburg uncorking a move on saturday he never tried before. i blacked out in the air. a scary moment during the women's competition. >> oh! >> sarka pancochova goes down hard. >> when pancochova, the czech republic fell so hard, it split her helmet open. she managed to coast down under her own power. it was a dazzling premiere for another new competition. team figure skating. team usa took the bronze, canada the silver, as the russians won gold. the host nation's first gold drew hugs are russian president vladimir putin. >> oh! totally sideways in the air. >> back on the slopes, a day of disappointment for bode miller. the olympic veteran finished

eighth in the downhill. he says he was hampered by a change in the weather. >> we have this cloud today, the cloud cover. when the visibility gets worse, that can be a disadvantage. >> miller shouldn't worry, the 36-year-old has another shot at gold in the super combined on friday. >> we should mention the sn snowboarder is all right. >> the medal count with norway with seven and canada with five and team usa with five as well. we have two snowboarders here. we've got two of team usa gold medal winners here. sage kotsenburg and jamie anderson, each grabbed gold in the slopestyle event over the weekend. good morning. congratulations. >> thank you for having us. >> jamie, you have 11 family members, is that right, here? did that make it extra special? >> it definitely did. >> and their travel was a little

tough to get here? >> can you imagine traveling with ten family members? but, i mean, it's so special to have them all here. and i couldn't be more stoked. >> sage, not only did you win the first medal for the u.s. you won the first medal for a u.s. athlete ever in the olympics on russian soil. does that sink in? you're going to be in the history books. >> yeah. pretty unreal to think about that stuff. i was stoked to be on the first ever snowboard slopestyle team. and to top it off with a medal, it being gold, first ever slopestyle medal, fourth ever american to have first gold in the games and then first one in russia. it's insane. too much to take in almost. >> did i hear right? you actually basically invented a trick you did for the very first time in your gold-medal winning performance? that takes a lot of nerve. >> i'd never done that trick before. a couple of people had done it. but i'd never even thought about trying it. i just winged it and ended up landing it. it was pretty cool. >> you're going to wing it, wing it at the olympics, right? >> no other place to do it.

>> jamie, talk to me about the night before the competition. your level of nerves. i understand you didn't sleep all that well or eat all that well. >> yeah, there's a lot of nerves and anticipation leading up to this event for all of us. but i had to take a moment, calm down and just, yeah, get ready for the day. >> what about you, sage? what did you do the night before? >> i unfortunately had to skip opening ceremonies because it was late night and we had a really early day. so i just ate a bunch of candy and chips and just got ready. got in the olympic vibe. >> why did i know you were going to say that? >> breakfast of champions. >> watching "fight club 2." >> there were some onion rings in there. >> jamie, some people are not sure about slopestyle. they think it's an x games sport. what do you want to tell those people? >> i would say to embrace it. it's so fun and i feel like bringing a new, fresh energy to the olympic games. and it's so fun to watch.

gay. willie geist joins us now with a look at why the announcement is so significant. as we said, this is huge. >> a big deal. one of the biggest stars the nfl perhaps to make history following on the heels of jason collins in the nba. university of missouri defensive end michael sam has now announced and revealed he is gay. the 24-year-old expected to be taken early round of the nfl draft come april is now poised to become pro football's first openly gay player. >> i came to tell the world i'm an openly proud gay man. >> michael sam from the university of missouri and a highly touted nfl prospect announced sunday that he is gay. >> i just want to own my truth before anyone breaks the story about me. >> sam broke the news publicly in interviews with the "new york times" and espn's "outside the lines." but something he told his fellow players last august before the start of the tigers' 12-2 season. >> i came out to my teammates and they took it great, rallied

around me and supported me. i could not ask for better teammates. >> the announcement means the lineman has the potential to become the nfl's first openly gay player. late sunday night, the university of missouri tweeted its support saying, quote, we support tigers of all stripes at mizzou. proud of you, mike sam. he was the defensive player of the year, the best defensive player in the best conference in college football. he's expected to be a mid round pick in april's draft. when the season kicks off in september, sam hopes his future career will be defined by his talent rather than by his sexual orientation. >> i don't think i should be defined as michael sam, the gay athlete, the gay football player. i want to be defined michael sam for being a great person and have great character. >> so natalie, the draft comes up in april in a few months. and you already hear anonymous nfl sources say, well, he could

be a distraction in the locker room with this new issue. but he wasn't a distraction for a team that played in the ncaa championship this year. and won the cotton bowl. >> well, took a lot of courage to do what he did. thank you, willie. wrong way crashes are to blame for 11 deaths in florida and california. five people were killed on a tampa highway sunday morning. police say an suv was driving south in the northbound lanes when it hit a car head on. and in california, six people were killed by a driver traveling the wrong way in los angeles. the 21-year-old driver accused in the crash faces dui and vehicular manslaughter charges. snow and ice expected to coat part of the south this week. two weeks ago you recall cities in the region were paralyzed by a couple inches of snow. the city says it will start treating roads tonight. also in the pacific northwest, several days of snow are causing big problems for drivers from seattle to oregon. portland city officials send out a cell phone alert telling

residents to stay indoors. al will update ous us on the forecast shortly. and oklahoma state basketball player who shoved a fan during a game has been suspended for three games. on saturday, sophomore marcus smart got into an argument with a texas tech fan, the two exchanged words and smart shoved the man. smart later apologized on sunday. now, as for the fan, he has voluntarily agreed to not attend any more texas tech games this season. also coming up, a new coffee shop with a familiar name creating quite a stir in los angeles. the coffee shop, get this, is called dumb starbucks -- not to be confused with starbucks. and it opened on friday. customers are showing up there in droves. the logo on the store, as you can tell, is exactly the same as starbucks but with the word dumb added to it. the coffee shop claims it can get away with it thanks to the parody law saying they are technically making fun of starbucks. a spokesperson for the real

you. i'm meteorologist christina loren. this is a picture of the aftermath in santa rosa. tanglewood creek, a handrail here where a lot of people like to walk. yeah, completely flooded. we're going to get a break. this other picture, near the sonoma county airport. travel cautiously in the north bay. and areas north of the golden gate bridge. we have light shower activity. at this point we're watching for a nice day. and that's your latest weather. matt? >> all right, al. thanks very much. only five days in the competition, these games have delivered memorable performances and a few disappointing defeats. scott blackmun is ceo of the u.s. olympic committee. always good to see you. how are you doing? >> doing great. the athletes are having a blast. and we had great performances, five medals, sage and jamie had gold. it's all good for us. >> you plot this out. look at this advance. you know where the u.s. has a good chance to win medals, when they might come. as we sit here five days into the games, is it going as expected?

>> it's going almost exactly as we expected. we won some medals we weren't sure we would win and didn't win some we hoped we might. overall, we're right where we need to be. >> you mentioned jamie and sage. did you see sage winning a gold medal? >> i did not. but i saw jamie. we watched sage on television. >> bode miller was skiing great going into the final on the downhill on sunday, then he slipped a little. what do you think his chances are of regrouping now and getting ready for his future events? >> if anybody can do it, i think bode can. he's shown himself to be a tough competitor. he's big, strong, we're not worried about bode. >> we want to talk about injuries. we have 15-year-old maggie voisin broke her ankle in a practice run. ty walker has been icing down wounds from the same course, by the way. heidi kloser touched a lot of people in the opening ceremony coming in on crutches and wheelchair, wanting to know if she was still going to be considered an olympian.

how do these injuries set back the team? >> we have a strong team and obviously we'd be a stronger team if these athletes could compete. but we feel really good about the team we have. and all three of them have done great character and she is an olympian for sure. >> let me ask you about some of the courses. bode miller says the downhill is treacherous. and we had danny davis this morning talking about the halfpipe as garbage. what's your view on some of these courses they're talking about? >> we spent a lot of time talking to the athletes. and overall, the athletes really like the course. they like the snow. it's not the same every course is a little bit different. but we actually have been hearing good feedback on our athletes. >> would you prefer if the u.s. athletes wouldn't make comments like that? >> you know, i think it's easier on us and easier on them if they focus on the competition and not some of the conditions. but at the end of the day, our athletes, i think, have been doing great with the press and have been very, very focused on their own competition as opposed to what the others are doing. >> in the media, we have a short

attention span. here we are in sochi, and already there's a buzz about 2024 and a potential u.s. bid to have the summer games back home. cities being talked about, san diego, los angeles, san francisco, dallas, philly and boston. what can you tell me about a potential bid? >> we would love to see a u.s. bid. too early to tell if it's going to be the right time and place. >> who makes that call? >> our board of directors at the u.s. olympic committee. we will decide if the u.s. will submit a bid. we've got until late 2015 until we need to make that decision. and we are in discussions with a lot of the cities that you described. >> we'll keep our fingers crossed. scott, we'll see you throughout the games. thank you so much for coming this morning. back over to the guys. >> i'm just putting a calendar entry for 2025. meantime, the winter olympic games are dominating the conversation online. and jenna hager bush is holding down the -- which room is it?

>> via conata. sochi is the most social olympic games ever, of course, without a doubt, there have been nearly 9 million tweets since the olympics have started. we got some of our favorites from the first day of competition. starting with this picture tweeted by u.s. bobsledder johnny quinn when he was locked in the bathroom and forced to find a way out. he tweeted, with no phone to call for help, i used my bobsled push training to break out #sochijailbreak. and russian snowboarder, alexey sobolev -- he didn't pick up a medal here in sochi, but he did pick up quite a few dates. after putting his telephone number on his helmet during competition, he received over 2,000 texts and dozens of pictures. some of which are not appropriate for our broadcast, by the way. that's one way to pick up a

girlfriend. and all of you probably remember the mulroney not impressed face. there you go. some people say it could never be topped. but she may have some competition from figure skater ashley wagner who was not impressed when she saw her score in the short program the other night. of course, the ashley wagner has become a mean mashable, we put these two together. when you see her reaction to the fifth olympic ring, not impressed. and also if she had the same problem as johnny quinn, not impressed. so i wonder how she feels about being on the "today" show this morning. ashley? >> you're impressed or not impressed? >> she's not impressed. #nobigdeal. can you do the face? >> we mastered that face. >> al roker's got it.

♪ a very good monday morning to you. i'm laura garcia-cannon. several families being allowed back into their homes in east san jose following an 11-hour standoff. s.w.a.t. officers were trying to catch a wanted felon in the home not far from story road. authorities say the suspect barricaded himself in a home around 6:30 last night. officers convinced the suspect to turn himself in about 5:30 this morning. he was wanted on several charges including offenses related to weapons. no one was hurt. >> this weekend's storm damaged roads and flooded businesses. in the north bay four days of rain turned downtown mill valley streets into rivers. this morning the waters receded

but sandbags are still up. the storm drains flooding costing thousands in lost revenue. let's check the forecast now with meteorologist christina loren. >> hey, thanks, laura. good morning to you at home. i want to talk a little about how much rain we accumulated and what you'll notice about the totals. we converted them into feet because it's easier to see that we hit almost one foot of rainfall in mill valley, napa, checked in with one fresh food of rain. and major totals high atop mt. tam at about two feet of rain over the course of about 72 hours. as we progress throughout the day today you'll notice the showers are subsiding. that's going to continue to be the case. we're going to clear out and dry out so most of those clouds will be left out over our local mountains but overall we're looking good, beautiful air quality, take it easy out there on the roads. speaking of which here is mike.

just slightly. we're going to begin with that historic medal for team usa in the winter olympics in the inaugural team skating event. take a look. >> the first of its kind event continued this weekend when charlie white and meryl davis dazzled in sochi, winning the short program in the ice dance competition and helping push the americans into third place going into last night's main event. >> triple loop. >> reporter: as for the women's short program, u.s. skater ashley wagner came on strong. during sunday night's program, gracie gold scored second in the women's free skate. >> this is magnificent. >> reporter: achieving a personal best while establishing her position as a strong medal contender in the upcoming individual event. her strong performance followed up by davis and white who delivered once again for team usa. >> this program got better and better as they went on. >> reporter: earning the highest free dance score ever recorded,

and helping team usa bring home the bronze. >> and we have eight members of the u.s. skating team with us now. ashley wagner, charlie white, jeremy abbott, jason brown and the pairs team. good morning, bronze medalists. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> so skating is an individual sport. was it fun to compete as a team? was it a bonding experience, ashley? >> absolutely. we've all participated. it was fun for us to go out there and work toward this common goal. >> it was amazing. one thing we noticed in the flower ceremony was that vladimir putin came over and greeted you. did you have any words? i saw him say hello to you, meryl. >> yeah. he complimented us, which was flattering and exciting. >> did that add nerves knowing putin was watching your performance? >> it was kind of a treat for us all right at the end there. it was fun. >> ashley, we're talking about your reaction, of course, on saturday night. i think it's fair to say you don't have a poker face. >> nope. not at all. i wear my heart on my sleeve.

>> but you skated great. was that a real confidence builder? >> absolutely. i needed that confidence. i came off a rocky nationals and needed to prove to myself more than anything that one competition didn't define me. >> and gracie, we saw you last night. you skated beautifully. you've got competition, both of you, with this russian skater 15 years old yulia lipnitskaya. what do you think of her? >> she's amazing. a machine and tough competitor and i can't wait to skate against her again in the individual. >> you can take her, right? >> absolutely. >> meryl and charlie, everyone expects you to be perfect. turns out, you were, but did that add a level of anxiety or intimidation? >> no, it was great. we were able to have the support of our team. we wanted to go out and fight and try to earn that bronze medal. so, you know, we didn't feel like there was too much pressure. >> jeremy, jason, you guys are facing your individual events this week, are you looking for redemption and feeling like you haven't had your best skate here?

>> absolutely. i haven't had close to my best skate. but i got that over with early. and now it's time to focus on the individuals and to, you know, get some more hardware for usa. >> i'm so excited. this is amazing. amazing. i don't know what to say. i can't wait for the individual event, it's been great. the team feel. we're all in this together. we'll be in it for the individual events cheering each other on through it all. i'm really excited to go out there and skate the way i trained. >> finally, no rest for you guys. you go right into it. how are you feeling? >> tomorrow. >> yeah. >> we're ready to go. this is a great warm-up for us. ready to go tomorrow and wednesday. we're going to work just as hard and put out great performances, too. and we're thrilled to be part of such a great team, all such good friends and all really excited to share this moment together. >> it's kind of amazing because you're all starting out as medal winners, already. already going home with the bronze medal. is it pretty heavy? >> i don't think it's hit any of us yet. it's not going to sink in until

and intensity? how much rain and snow, we'll have to see. and out west, winter weather advisories, storm watches, we've got more rain and snow coming into the pacific northwest. look at that, we're looking at some areas 2 to 3 inches of rain and snowfall amounts in the cascades, some areas picking up to a foot to a foot and a half of snow. that's what's going on around the country, here's what's happening in your neck of the woods. hey, good morning to you. 7:37 is the time. we've got much needed rainfall over the weekend. right now spotty cells. i don't think you need your umbrella. we're going to clear out throughout the day today. you will need your chains over to tahoe for the first part of the day. look at this. almost seven feet of fresh powder high atop the mountains in kirkwood so we had really impressive totals. not only in the slopes, here in the bay area we accumulated over a foot of rainfall in places like napa, 60s for today. >> and that's your latest weather. okay. you may have heard some of these wild names that snowboarders

♪ and we welcome you back now to sochi's olympic park. friday night's opening ceremony gave a lot of memorable moments to a lot of people. but it's really what happened before the broadcast began that still has a lot of people talking. meredith and i had a chance to cohost the event. and we got to see what some people are calling the performance of the night. >> yeah. we knew that the security police would play a prominent role in the olympics, but we didn't know they'd make headlines quite like these. before the caldron was lit or the athletes marched in or the fifth ring failed to open, there were these guys. ♪ >> reporter: the russian police choir stole the show even before the opening ceremony officially

begun. ♪ she's up all night for the fun ♪ ♪ i'm up all night to get lucky ♪ >> reporter: their performance of "get lucky" turned heads around the globe and turned this unique choir into an internet sensation. but these guys are no stranger to the spotlight. the choir has been around since 1939. and over the years have performed more than 7,000 shows in over 50 countries. even performing for pope john paul ii. and apparently, "get lucky" isn't the only surprising song up their uniform sleeve. but "daft punk" that's gotten the world dancing to a popular song they made all their own. i got a chance to meet up with them before the show and asked what it meant for them to be

>> well, obviously, i haven't seen it because it's not on nbc, which will be tonight. but i did hear about the results and i heard she had an amazing downhill run and hung on for the bronze medal. i'm really happy for her. she's always a game-day contender. and, you know, really psyched for another medal for team usa. >> yeah. and i know one of your good friends is the one who won that event. would you like to say anything to her? >> yeah, i mean, she called me after i had surgery and has always been a really good friend. this is her third olympic gold medal. i'm really happy for her, as well. she's just a really great person and it's always nice to see someone like that on the top of the podium. >> in the men's downhill, bode miller was skiing well. and then things went wrong on the lower half. as a skier, do you know when precious seconds are slipping away in the middle of a run?

>> yeah. sometimes you can tell. sometimes you can't. i thought bode had an amazing run especially on the top. he really executed things well. he didn't seem nervous. normally if you're nervous right out of the gate, you won't ski well. bode came out of the gate charging and made a few small mistakes that ended up costing him time. i bet he didn't even know he made mistakes while he was skiing. it was so slight. >> and he's got a lot of skiing left to do. how do you regroup mentally after a disappointing finish, lindsey? >> well, there was so many expectations on him in the downhill. he's got this performance out of the way. he's going to be more excited, more motivated to keep pushing himself the next few events. he has a chance to get a medal in three more events. he's got plenty more chances. >> yeah. i want to ask you for your perspective on another story that really kind of captured my heart. and that was heidi kloser who is the skier who shattered a knee

before the games even began. she came into the opening ceremony with crutches and a wheelchair. and the first question she asked after her injury was am i still an olympian if i got injured before the opening ceremony? as someone who has dealt with injuries, what's your take on this story? what did you think when you heard that? >> of course she's an olympian. she qualified, you know, the hardest thing to do is just to qualify for the olympics. and i thought it was really amazing she walked in the opening ceremony. she deserved to be there. she is an olympian and, you know, she's going to be back and she's so young, she'll be back in the next four years. >> yeah. i just thought it was so nice that clearly that was so important to her that she be considered an olympian. i couldn't agree with you more. she is one, not only in terms of her physical ability, but also her emotional side, as well. lindsey, thanks so much for your input on this.

moscow. back in soviet times, it was a worker's paradise, a beach vacation here was a dream come true. but today, this town of 400,000 has been transformed and is quickly learning to welcome the world. just south of sochi, the town of adler is home to this, the first ever winter olympic park. six venues within distance of each other. if it's happening on ice, it's happening here, including hockey, curling, and speedskating all in once place. sochi is the warmest city to host the winter olympics. on average in february, about 43 degrees. but ice among the palm trees is one thing. a short ride up the road takes you to sochi's alpine crown jewel, the mountain cluster, a brand new train makes the run in about 30 minutes bringing athletes and spectators to one of the world's newest ski resorts, rosa khutor. just up the gondola from base
